The lake District
Just over half an hour's drive from Carwinley, the majestic beauty of the Lake District is undeniable. Stop off at Pooley Bridge on the edge of Ullswater for morning coffee and proceed along the edge of the Lake, past Patterdale 'til you reach the Kirkstone Pass. Break for a bar lunch at the Kirkstone Pass Inn and enjoy the vista, then proceed on to Ambleside & Windermere. Return via Keswick and Penrith, both have excellent restauants and make a delightful location to stop for Dinner.
the scottish borders
Carwinley is located in the Debateable Lands, a once lawless area that lies on the Scotland, England border where the Border Reivers raided and plundered from the 13th - 17th centuries. Nearby you can explore the ruins of Hermitage Castle where history is filled with intrigue, murder, torture and treason. This awesome, eerie ruin has plenty of tales to tell, thanks to its role as “the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain.
hadrians wall
Extending for some 73 miles, across the entire width of the UK, Hadrians Wall crosses some of the wildest countyside in England. From Carwinley you can explore ruined forts, museums and a Roman town along the wall. The best place to see the longest continuous stretch of the wall today is Birdoswald Roman Fort. Don't miss the Roman fort, turret, milecastle and new exhibition.
gretna & gretna green
Gretna Green is famous for marriages with around 5,000 couples tying the knot here and in Gretna every year. Historically it was to Gretna Green that young English runaway couples eloped so that they could be married ‘over the anvil’ from the age of 16. Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where couples have come to marry since 1754, is still here. A visit to Gretna Green would not be complete without visiting The World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop and Gretna Gateway Outlet Village
